The Collection comprises historical books, journals and pamphlets on physical education, sport, recreation and health education most published before 1946 although some books of a later date have been added.
Name of creator
Formed by the amalgamation of the City of Leeds College of Education (formerly the City of Leeds Training College) and Carnegie of Physical Education. In 1976 the College became part of Leeds Polytechnic.
In 1968 the City of Leeds College of Education and Carnegie College of Physical Education were merged becoming the City of Leeds and Carnegie College. Upon inspection in Carnegie Library and throughout the college a great many of Ernest Major’s core library of books were found that he had left to the college on his retirement. These were combined with similar books from the other college libraries to form the Carnegie Historical Collection.
In 1993 when the Library was being refurbished the Collection was transferred to Carnegie School where it was put in store. The collection was acquired by Archive and Special Collections in 2004.
