The City of Leeds Training College was formed in 1907. In 1913 a purpose built training college was opened in the grounds of the former Kirkstall Grange estate bought from the Beckett family. In 1933 Carnegie Hall was built on the same estate, to house the Carnegie College of Physical Training. A library was formed in the City of Leeds Training College and from 1912 this was housed in the Educational Block (today known as the James Graham Building). The hostels on the training college site each housed a Library but how extensive these were has not been established. From 1933 onwards Carnegie College had its own separate Library in Carnegie Hall. In 1968 the training college by then renamed City of Leeds College of Education was merged with the renamed Carnegie College of Physical Education to form the City of Leeds and Carnegie College and the separate libraries were combined. The College merged with Leeds Polytechnic in 1976 and the Library was retained at Beckett Park. In 1992 Leeds Polytechnic became Leeds Metropolitan University. The Library was renamed Beckett Park Learning Centre in 1996, in 2004 it became Headingley Campus Library.

Was responsible for the present incarnation of the archive bringing together disparate parts of the University's history and heritage under the umbrella of the Archive and Special Collections.Began working for Leeds Polytechnic in 1990.

Retired Principal Lecturer, Carnegie Faculty of Sport and Education, Leeds Metropolitan University. Studied at Leeds Polytechnic and joined the staff in 1983. Professional interests include history in Primary Schools. Major achievement was to negotiate the use of the 1881 Census in schools and colleges during the 1990s.Supported the fledgling archive by alerting potential users to its existence and facilitating regular donations.

Collection mainly focuses on material generated by the City of Leeds Training College and Carnegie Physical Training College. These include handbooks and prospectuses of the colleges dating from 1913 to 1970s, documents relating to the early years of Carnegie College, Carnegie College trip to Berlin Olympics in 1936. training college magazine ‘The Owl’ from 1930s, donations from alumni from various period, military items from 1940s when college was an Army Training Centre.

This artificial collection is based around material of historical interest housed by the Library at Beckett Park Campus later renamed Headingley Campus. The core items were entrusted to Joan Newiss, (Librarian) by Dr L. Connell (Principal), E. Exwood and P. Hamilton (senior members of staff) and by students of the college. Newiss records that the material was never part of the Library collection but was simply stored there for convenience. At some point possibly during the 1960s an attempt was made to formalise the material as an Archive Collection and some items bear markings and reference numbers from this period. Newiss also complied a detailed Calander of the material ca. mid 1980s. Robin Bateman (Librarian) and Newiss were the senior staff at the Library during this period. During the late 1970s and early 1980s a great deal of archival material was passed on to the Leeds District Archive at Sheepscar, the rationale being that the material made up part of the Local Education Authority records. The core material that makes up this collection was never passed on to Sheepscar and in 1994 Library managers decided that this should remain with the University as part of its heritage. Generally, substantial amount of heritage material was scattered throughout the Beckett Park site and an informal archive was developed in 1997 around the Newiss core holding by Keith Rowntree in an attempt to collect and preserve this historical material spread around the Campus. This archive in 2008 was formalised as the Archive and Special Collections with a University wide remit to collect and preserve the University's heritage.

The City of Leeds Training College was formed in 1907. In 1913 a purpose built training college was opened in the grounds of the former Kirkstall Grange estate bought from the Beckett family. In 1933 Carnegie Hall was built on the same estate, to house the Carnegie College of Physical Training. A library was formed in the City of Leeds Training College and from 1912 this was housed in the Educational Block (today known as the James Graham Building). The hostels on the training college site each housed a Library but how extensive these were has not been established. From 1933 onwards Carnegie College had its own separate Library in Carnegie Hall. In 1968 the training college by then renamed City of Leeds College of Education was merged with the renamed Carnegie College of Physical Education to form the City of Leeds and Carnegie College and the separate libraries were combined. The College merged with Leeds Polytechnic in 1976 and the Library was retained at Beckett Park. In 1992 Leeds Polytechnic became Leeds Metropolitan University. The Library was renamed Beckett Park Learning Centre in 1996, in 2004 it became Headingley Campus Library.

The City of Leeds Training College was formed in 1907. In 1913 a purpose built training college was opened in the grounds of the former Kirkstall Grange estate bought from the Beckett family. In 1933 Carnegie Hall was built on the same estate, to house the Carnegie College of Physical Training. A library was formed in the City of Leeds Training College and from 1912 this was housed in the Educational Block (today known as the James Graham Building). The hostels on the training college site each housed a Library but how extensive these were has not been established. From 1933 onwards Carnegie College had its own separate Library in Carnegie Hall. In 1968 the training college by then renamed City of Leeds College of Education was merged with the renamed Carnegie College of Physical Education to form the City of Leeds and Carnegie College and the separate libraries were combined. The College merged with Leeds Polytechnic in 1976 and the Library was retained at Beckett Park. In 1992 Leeds Polytechnic became Leeds Metropolitan University. The Library was renamed Beckett Park Learning Centre in 1996, in 2004 it became Headingley Campus Library.

A Lucy Box was a metal container, made at the Lucy Foundry in Oxford, used for electrical wiring, etc. Often used for trams as indicated by the initials LCT (Leeds Corporation Tramways). After trams were decommissioned the boxes were used for other purposes in this case probably telecommunications at the City of Leeds Training College.

Carnegie College of Physical Training Major, Ernest

Major was born on 28 July 1898 in Blackburn, Lancashire. In 1901 his father, William Major, was a Gymnastic and Fencing Master at Thommasons Gymnasium in Bolton. Ernest Major studied at the Silkeborg College of Physical Training in Sweden, 1913-15. He was a member of the Carnegie Advisory Body prior to his appointment as Warden. During the Second World War he served as Lieutenant in the 51st Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment promoted to Major towards the end of the war. From 1946 onwards he was HM Staff Inspector for Physical Education. Major was awarded an OBE in 1977. He died in 1989.

The majority of this material dates from around 1916 and records the resignation of Vice-Principal Winifred Mercier, the 'talk' to residential staff given by James Graham, Secretary for Education at Leeds, and the resulting resignation of nine women tutors from the College. It includes copies of letters among the key players in the so called 'scandal' news paper clippings relating to the events and reports from the Board of Education.

The original five bundles of papers has been retained, although it is clear that some items are missing and others out of place. No attempt has been made at this time to put the material into a logical order. It is probable that over the time these papers were held in the Library consecutive users have moved items from their original order.

 Beckett Park Library

The City of Leeds Training College was formed in 1907. In 1913 a purpose built training college was opened in the grounds of the former Kirkstall Grange estate bought from the Beckett family. In 1933 Carnegie Hall was built on the same estate, to house the Carnegie College of Physical Training. A library was formed in the City of Leeds Training College and from 1912 this was housed in the Educational Block (today known as the James Graham Building). The hostels on the training college site each housed a Library but how extensive these were has not been established. From 1933 onwards Carnegie College had its own separate Library in Carnegie Hall. In 1968 the training college by then renamed City of Leeds College of Education was merged with the renamed Carnegie College of Physical Education to form the City of Leeds and Carnegie College and the separate libraries were combined. The College merged with Leeds Polytechnic in 1976 and the Library was retained at Beckett Park. In 1992 Leeds Polytechnic became Leeds Metropolitan University. The Library was renamed Beckett Park Learning Centre in 1996, in 2004 it became Headingley Campus Library.

Carnegie College of Physical Training Major, Ernest

Major was born on 28 July 1898 in Blackburn, Lancashire. In 1901 his father, William Major, was a Gymnastic and Fencing Master at Thommasons Gymnasium in Bolton. Ernest Major studied at the Silkeborg College of Physical Training in Sweden, 1913-15. He was a member of the Carnegie Advisory Body prior to his appointment as Warden. During the Second World War he served as Lieutenant in the 51st Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment promoted to Major towards the end of the war. From 1946 onwards he was HM Staff Inspector for Physical Education. Major was awarded an OBE in 1977. He died in 1989.

This stone plaque is a copy, made by the Beckett family, of an earlier one originally erected by Benjamin Wade on his Grange rebuild of 1626. The lines echo an inscription at Bemerton Parsonage by the Poet George Herbert. Although these lines were not made popular until the 1630s after Herbert's death which suggests that the inscription was a later addition to Wade's 1626 mansion.

Composite postcard produced post WW1 by H. Burmiston of Leeds. Shows the newly built college buildings including the hostels and the Wesleyan College known at that time as Devonshire Hall. It was built in 1867-8 as the Wesleyan Methodist College. Some of the students from the City of Leeds Training College were based there during WW1 when the Beckett Park college buildings were being used as a Military Hospital, hence its inclusion on the postcard.

The Lingiad was held in Stockholm from 17 to 25 July 1939. it involved over 7,000 participants from 12 countries. It was held to mark the centenary of the death of Pehr Hendrick Ling, regarded as the father of Swedish gymnastics.Photographs showing the Carnegie and Loughborough combined team rehearsing their gymnastic routine in the Concert House, Stockholm. Inside the stadium during the opening ceremony procession of teams including Walter Winterbottom and the arrival of the Swedish king.

Born 4 February 1893 to Joseph Henry Baxter, a teacher and his wife Annie Morrell. Trained at the City of Leeds Training College ca. 1911-12. Between 1913 and 1920 she taught as Assistant Mistress at Beckett Street Juniors, Beckett Street Boys, Hunslet Carr Girls and Darley Street Mixed Schools.

A set of Postcards collected by Keith Rowntree mainly date from the early years of the Leeds Training College. Some describe the buildings as new. Two refer to the buildings as the Military Hospital which would date them to between 1914-18 although the hospital had a presence on site until 1927. Publishers of the postcards include local Leeds firms of H. Burniston, Pickard and Sons and Holland & Co..

On at least two occasions a Committee was set up to organise testimonials of retiring or leaving staff of the City of Leeds Training College. That of Dr Airey in 1933 included the commissioning of a portrait. Miss Simpson began at the College in that year and moved on to another post in 1945. The Committee was made up of Tutors and Students. This testimonial material appears to have originally been kept with City of Leeds Training College Old Students Association papers at BPL/OLD, however at some point they were separated.

These letters were written by the portrait painter Howard Somerville to M. T. Woodhouse a Senior Tutor at the City of Leeds Training College. They are concerned with the commission of a portrait of retiring Principal of the College, Dr. John R. Airey. Somerville had earlier been commissioned to paint the portrait of Airey's predecessor Walter Parsons. It seems Somerville as a favour to the College reduced his rates for the Airey commission.
