The Leeds Architectural Society was established in 1876, with architect George Corson as its first President. The Society amended its name to The Leeds and Yorkshire Architectural Society in 1883 being formally affiliated to the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1891 and later in 1928 changed its name to the West Yorkshire Society of Architects. Members of the Society were instrumental in the formation of a Leeds School of Architecture in 1902.

Martin Wainwright is an author and journalist, he was at The Guardian for 37 years, Northern Editor for 17 years retiring in 2012. He was born in Leeds. Educated at Shrewsbury and Oxford. His father was Richard Wainwright Liberal M.P. for Colne Valley

Has authored books on the North and rural matters. Other books on veteran cars, the Morris Minor and the Mini, and writes about his passion for moths. Awarded M.B.E.in 2000, Honourary degrees from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2012 and the University of Leeds in 2013.
